Disparities in Chronic Disease Prevalence
Health disparities are disproportionately felt among minority groups. Higher instances of chronic diseases, such as diabetes and obesity, coupled with reduced access to care leaves many populations with fewer options when it comes to healthcare. According to HealthReform.gov, 1/3 of Hispanics and American Indians and 1/5 African Americans lack health insurance. The same study shows that "15% of African Americans, 14% Hispanics, and 18% of American Indians suffer from adult onset diabetes". The Digital Divide
There are several key issues that hinder usage of health IT for patients, clinics and hospitals. The digital divide increases gaps in low-income and minority healthcare because of low adoption rates and usage.
